Ayotte brings 'Stop Spending Tour' to Somersworth

SOMERSWORTH — Senate hopeful Kelly Ayotte spent Friday mingling with patrons of Sumner Country Restaurant and Creamery and blasting runaway spending in Washington.

"We're spending money we don't have," the former attorney general said as she settled down for a family-style lunch.

"We need to stop spending in Washington and get the economy on track. We need to lower taxes on businesses and we need to get our spending under control in order to do that."

Ayotte has been delivering this message in a series of restaurant visits that are part of what she is calling her "Stop Spending Tour." She said it has allowed her to speak with business owners and gain a personal view of their economic situation.

"The government is spending too much and taxing too much," Ayotte said. "We need to lower taxes so (business owners) can put money back into their businesses. We're in a climate of uncertainty with rising health care costs, and (tax increases) really take away from (business owners') ability to invest in their business and employ more people."

Ayotte recently created the Small Business Advisory Board, which comprises business leaders from across the state. Pat Brady, owner of Somersworth's Label Tech, Inc., serves on the board and joined Ayotte on Friday.

As a business owner, Brady said he is pleased with Ayotte's stance on curbing spending.

"We're very concerned with what's going on in D.C.," Brady said. "The current administration is out of touch and the current landscape is changing. It's going to affect small businesses, large businesses and individuals. I'm supporting Kelly because she's opposed to it; with all this growth in government, it's almost impossible to start a business right now."

Brady said the biggest effect of the uncertainty that business owners are feeling is the lack of confidence in building up their business.

"So maybe we don't go out and invest in new equipment or an addition to the plant," he said.

Michael Davis, co-owner of Sumner Country Restaurant and Creamery and Sumner Printing, also in Somersworth, agreed with Brady from across the lunch table.

He said it's unfortunate the economy makes business owners so wary of hiring, investing in new equipment or building up their business because "that's pretty much how you develop your company and grow."
